Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game – Starter Set

The Starter Set is a boxed introduction to Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game aimed at new players or those curious about the system but not ready to commit to the full Core Book. Announced by Magpie Games, it launched in the U.S. on February 26, 2023, with international availability following around April 12, 2023. The set includes a mix of physical components, simplified rules, and two short adventures set in both the Aang and Korra eras.

⚙️ What’s Inside

Here’s what the Starter Set includes, based on the official contents lists:

ComponentDescription
Rulebook (condensed)32-page booklet containing the streamlined version of the rules needed to play using the Starter Set.
Adventure Booklet40 pages total, split into two introductory scenarios: The Pirates of Crimson Sails (era of Aang) and The Burning Fuse (era of Korra).
Pre-generated Characters10 illustrated character sheets—ready to play.
Reference Materials / Cards21 combat action cards; 6 rules reference sheets. These help speed up play by letting players refer to common rules quickly.
Dice & AccessoriesTen engraved dice featuring Tui and La instead of the standard “6”; a large full-color map of the Four Nations. Also included is a code to unlock a digital version of the Starter Set and a 50% discount code for the Core Book (NEXUS edition on Demiplane).

🎭 How It Plays at the Table

The Starter Set is designed to let a group of 2–6 players get started quickly, whether for one-shots or a short campaign. The inclusion of two adventures in two different Avatar-eras helps show off how the setting shifts depending on time and place.

Because the rules are condensed, you won’t have the full breadth of options from the Core Book (playbooks, advanced moves, etc.), but you have enough for players to pick one of the pre-gens, make decisions, use bending or martial arts, and face meaningful conflicts. The map and reference sheets keep sessions moving with less lookup downtime.

The system’s Powered-by-the-Apocalypse foundation means moves matter—fictional framing, player agency, and stakes are emphasized over tactical optimization. New players will likely appreciate the clarity and assistive materials (cards, rules sheets) to guide play. The digital unlock and discount code also ease transition if you want to continue into full play later.

✨ Highlights

  • Accessibility: Great value for someone who wants everything needed to start (rules, adventures, dice, accessories) without buying the full Core Book.
  • Dual eras sample: Players get a chance to see how storytelling differs in Aang-era vs Korra-era, letting them taste both flavors.
  • Physical component richness: Engraved dice, cards, reference sheets, map—all enhance the tactile experience, which helps new players feel more immersed.
  • Strong onboarding: The condensed rules and pregens mean very little setup; ideal for first sessions, for kids, or for getting friends hooked.

⚠️ Things to Watch

  • Limited rules scope: Because the rulebook is condensed and artifacts of the Starter Set, it lacks many advanced options, playbooks, and mechanical depth found in the Core Book. If you want full character creation, custom bending styles, or later era complexities, expect to need the full rulebook.
  • Adventure length: The included adventures are introductory and intended to showcase mechanics and theme, not long-running campaigns. For long campaigns you’ll want to expand with core supplements.
  • Redundant components for existing owners: If you already own much of the line (Core Book, action card decks, etc.), some physical accessories may overlap or feel less novel.
  • Map detail level: Some users report the map is visually pleasing but lower in geographic/faction detail compared to maps in larger supplements. Still usable, just not ultra-granular.

🧭 Where It Fits in the Line

The Starter Set works as both an introduction and stepping stone. For newcomers, it provides everything required to begin. For experienced groups, it’s a compact toolkit—useful for side stories or sampling the system changeover before investing in the full line.

Retail wise, it’s also significant: in the U.S., the Starter Set was initially exclusive to Target for some period. An international release followed, making the set more broadly accessible.

𝕍 Final Verdict

If you want a gateway into Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game, this Avatar Legends Starter Set delivers very nearly all you need in a polished, thoughtful package. It doesn’t replace the Core Book for long campaigns, but for learning, testing, introducing friends, or family play, it nails the mission. The mix of eras, nice physical accessories, and solid adventure design make it an excellent starting investment. Strongly recommended for anyone on the fence — cheaper entry cost, minimal hassle, and enough content to see whether you want to dive deeper.

🔍 What this Means in Practice

  • If your group is just starting out, or you want to test the system without overwhelm, the Starter Set wins on speed, clarity, and cost. You can run 2–4 solid sessions straight out of the box.
  • If you expect to run a long campaign, or want high customization, flexible character development, and want every rule option available, investing in the Core Book makes sense.
  • If you like the Starter Set but find yourself wanting more later, many groups buy the Starter Set first, then upgrade with the Core Book—and use that discount code included in the Starter Set (if applicable) to make it more economical.
  • For GMs who prefer prepared content (maps, accessories, cards), the Starter Set’s physical parts help smooth a lot of friction. The Core Book plus supplements can match that, but often at extra cost/time.
